ACT2, SCENE2
At the end of A2,S2 Polonius comes into contact with Hamlet after Ophelia reveals all about their affair and everyone's worries about Hamlet come out. In his conversation with Hamlet appears crazy. His words do not match with Polonius's and don't eve make sense.
LORD POLONIUS
Do you know me, my lord?
HAMLET
Excellent well; you are a fishmonger.
At the end of this weird and confusing conversation G&R come in and deter Hamlet. This is the beginning to a weird central consensus to Hamlet's state of mind.
Hamlet is not crazy at this point. This dialogue is to introduce the thought that Hamlet might be crazy because of his father's recent death. If he is thought of as crazy, people will discount him and be less circumspect in their actions and words around him. He does this to mainly find out about Claudius and if Polonius knew anything about it. Without this scene the play would be changed as well. When the players are introduced it wold seem different as well because people wouldn't see it as one of Crazy Hamlet's machinations because the play is an important piece of the story.
