ACT3, SCENE1
This scene is important for two things. The dialogue between Hamlet and Ophelia furthers Hamlet's "madness". The downfall of Ophelia begins here as well.
Hamlet's "madness" is furthered because of the fact that Claudius and Polonius are hidden in one of the anterooms off the main hall with one-way glass. Hamlet's craziness is made up until now because this interlude shows the audience that a part of Hamlet might be actually crazy. His supposed views of marriage also show a bit of craziness because marriage should still be condoned. These words are because of his mother's marriage to his uncle.
Ophelia's downfall starts here. The character of Ophelia by this time seems week. Shakespeare seems to portray his female characters with weak elements(Ophelia, Gertrude, Mac Beth's wife). The psyche of a young woman can be fragile. throw in the spurning of a young woman's lover and you have the beginnings of a complete mental breakdown leading to suicide. The emotional attachments we as sentient beings provide help build our mental and emotional limits of being hurt. In later scenes the rest of Ophelia's psyche breaks down.
