ACT2, SCENE2
Even though Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are minor players, their actions help further along the play in such ways that it doesn't lose the attention of the audience. They do this because they are Hamlet's friends and they are tasked with finding out what is wrong with Hamlet. Is he crazy or just grief-stricken? Which is asked by most of the Major characters throughout most of the play. What no one realizes is that Hamlet is on to them and he knows his true friend is Horatio.
If R&G weren't in the play, Hamlet would have had no one to trade places with on the hanging block. Only in that respect is R&G disposable literally. In their conversation with Hamlet their reason for being here comes out when Hamlet confesses to them that he is mad only some of the time and that he know his uncle-father and aunt-mother sent for them. But little do they know that Hamlet is playing them and through them he is playing Claudius.
