ACT1 SCENE2
This page is a sub page because it happens in the same scene as the wedding but is still a main point.
Hamlet is in the background during this scene where generally the audience would expect him to be in the forefront because of his title and links to the throne. Claudius refers to Hamlet as cousin and son. Hamlet replies "A little more than kin, and less than kind". to Hamlet this marriage is wrong. it goes against the grain. the fact his father has been buried less than six months doesn't help the situation. He is asked why he still wears black and he replies that he is woeful of his father's death. His mother asks him not to go back to college and he agrees. Hamlet appears to be OK but he still isn't agreeable to the situation. As everyone leaves, Horatio, Marcellus and Bernardo come to him and tells him they saw his father's ghost.
The reason this dialogue is important is because the family dynamics of the royal family is apparent. The adjectives and adverbs associated with each character depends on the perception of each individual. But Shakespeare still had words that he wanted his characters to be described as. As stated before the marriage of Claudius and Gertrude is wrong in the eyes of the audience even if only the time period between husbands is off(BY A FEW YEARS IN MY OPINION). Its apparent that Hamlet doesn't like the situation.
In my opinion this definitely leads to Hamlet's soliloquy even more so than the wedding.
